To Sort, Or Not To Sort -- That is the Question

I found a cute website recently called Sorting With Style. They are an online retailer of all things pertaining to organization: notebooks, planners, desk accessories, clipboards, etc.

Not gonna lie -- most of the design patterns are heavily geared toward women, however, there are a few more masculine-looking collections, too.

Check it out.

Chihuly + Fun With PhotoShop

Yesterday evening my boyfriend and I went to see the Desert Botanical Garden's "Chihuly: The Nature of Glass" exhibit. All the glass sculptures scattered throughout the garden are by artist Dale Chihuly, whose works are on display in more than 200 museums worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. (Plus, his name is fun to say. )

Here are a few photos that I took while I was at the garden. Most of these I merely touched up, but a couple I altered pretty heavily. And had a lot of fun while doing so. Because I am just that much of a nerdlette.

Click on any photo for a larger image.

The last one posted here is my favorite, because it looks like it's out of a comicbook or something. You'll have to click on it to bring up the larger version in order to see what I'm talking about.

Anyway, not my best photographic work, but it's hard to take a good photo when dozens of people are trying to pushing their way past you. Seriously, you have got to watch out for the senior citizens around here. They will take you out with their walkers and canes...

Happy Earth Day 2009!

Today Disney premieres its documentary film Earth, narrated by James Earl Jones, and I expect it to be at a fairly high level of awesome. Here's the trailer:

(Click the "play" icon, and then click the little "HD" in the bottom right corner to watch it in high-definition. If you don't have a super-fast internet connection, I would suggest pausing the video for a few seconds to let the high-quality video load before you continue watching it. I know, I know, I'm annoyingly methodical... Copy editor, remember?)

If that short video doesn't make you fall in love with our planet, I don't know what would. To learn more ways you can show Mother Earth how much you appreciate her, visit these sites:

Earth Day Network
Earth 911
Treehugger
Ecologue
EarthDay.gov
TerraPass

May we celebrate our beloved Earth, today and every day!

*Woops! Somewhere back there, did I mention falling in love with our planet and then right after that compare it to a mother-figure? I did, didn't I. Well that's not right. Sorry. You know what I mean.

Today

One Art

The art of losing isn't hard to master;
so many things seem filled with the intent
to be lost that their loss is no disaster,

Lose something every day. Accept the fluster
of lost door keys, the hour badly spent.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

Then practice losing farther, losing faster:
places, and names, and where it was you meant
to travel. None of these will bring disaster.

I lost my mother's watch. And look! my last, or
next-to-last, of three beloved houses went.
The art of losing isn't hard to master.

I lost two cities, lovely ones. And, vaster,
some realms I owned, two rivers, a continent.
I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster.

-- Even losing you (the joking voice, a gesture
I love) I shan't have lied. It's evident
the art of losing's not too hard to master
though it may look like (Write it!) a disaster.

"I Dreamed a Dream"

A woman walks on to the stage during a taping of the show Britain's Got Talent.

Everyone takes a look at her and immediately lowers their expectations.

Then she starts to sing and blows them all away.

What does this say about the human race? Have we really come to place that much weight on a person's appearance that we rely on this as an indicator of his or her capabilities? That makes me sad.

Where The Wild Things Are Movie Trailer

I will admit that I was never really into this book when I was younger; however, the movie trailer looks flippin' excellent. Really, really odd, but excellent.

There Will Be Karate Chops Involved

No matter how many times I watch this video, it always makes me smile. Or, depending on my current state of mind, deliriously happy and giggly.

I don't have a cat, but if I did, I would mos' def' want him to be a ninja kitty.

I Was Practically Asking For It

I know that in my last post I was complaining about how work is taking over my life, buuuuuut ... This weekend is a three-day weekend for me, because yesterday our CEO gave us the day off. Praise baby Jesus.

So I will be less whiny in this post, promise.

I've been a little irresponsible lately as far as my computer and all my precious files are concerned. Because even though I've been saving photos, music files and my freelance articles to my hard drive right and left, and even though my laptop is now getting up there in years, I have still, not in the past four years, backed up any of my precious, precious files. I have been neglectful. Which is shameful, because someone like me, someone who works all day every day with computers and has witnessed firsthand more times than I care to remember the tragedy that strikes when computers crap out should know better.

And so, several days ago I ordered a monster of an external hard drive from Buy.com, and since its arrival, I have been copying, digitizing, cataloging and renaming files like a crazy person.

Time to get my save on this weekend.

Like Swimming Against the Current

Maybe I should just rename this site to "The Life and Times of a Struggling Writer/Editor," since work seems to be mainly what's on my mind these days.

This month, I'm writing two or three articles for my primary job, plus several freelance articles for miscellaneous websites. I'm guessing things are going to get complicated about the middle to the end of the month, so this week I'll be pushing myself to get as much out of the way as I can.

I remember when my job used to be a means to an end -- it was something I did every day in order to be able to enjoy the rest of my life. But now I feel like I spend so much energy overextending myself, trying to make myself invaluable to the company, and worrying about whether or not my job will even be there the next day, that I don't really have the time or energy I used to have to relax and enjoy my hobbies. (When was the last time I even picked up my knitting needles?) It's stressful and frustrating.

But, I do still at least have a job, and I'm certainly very grateful for that. Just have to keep my head above the waves for now, until I make it into shallower waters.
